I chose the book
The Academic Library and the Net Gen Student: Making the Connection by Susan Gibbons. The book provides a guide for using Web 2.o technologies for communicating with and supporting the "net generation" (which, of course, includes high school students).

School Libraries--RSS Competency

The RSS feed (located at the bottom of the page) comes from the online version of the School Library Journal, a reviewer of books, technology, and multimedia for children and teens. It supports the theme of this blog, reluctant teen readers in secondary school libraries, by providing current information for school libraries.

I found the RSS feed through my blog search using technorati.

The Right Book for the Right Reader: Podcast Competency

Often I feel that I'm constantly "selling" a book to a student. Teens enjoy reading reviews of books (more than than actual reading of the book...kind of like movie previews I suppose). Listening to another teen give reviews might just be a good way to interest a reluctant reader.

I found the following podcast of a teen reviewing books on npr.
I searched the database directly on the npr site.

The name of the podcast is "Three Books: For Teens Who Hate to Read"
by Amber Gibson

Teen Librarian: Blog Competency

When working with teens, I think you have to remember that the drama that they experience is real. You have to remember what it feels like to have those emotions that are totally out of control and then you can perhaps direct them to literature that validates those emotions.

This quote from the blog "Alternative Teen Services" underscores my experiences working with teen readers.

"Teens and those who never got over being teens need oils, talismans, quotations—above all, these fragments of literature that tell us “you’re not alone, you’re not crazy, it’s not your fault.” Reading books for or about young people as an adult is a displacing experience. We may wish certain books and characters had been available to us as teens or we may find a heady succor today in being transported to the adolescent past."

I found the blog using the search engine technorati.

Introduction & Purpose

The purpose of this blog is to satisfy the blog competencies requirement for an online graduate course in library science.

As a high school English teacher I am often dragging my reluctant readers through required reading. One of my primary goals is to help students discover self through reading and understand how reading not only makes them better readers and writers, but also better human beings.

The primary topic for the blog is "Motivating Reluctant Teen Readers" and the library type is secondary school libraries.
